Where am I from?

Where do I come from? This is a question that I hold very mixed feelings for. As someone who has been described on several occasions as ‘ethnically vague’ it is a question I am often asked, though not always in such a polite way. In this context however, where I come from has nothing to do with the colour of my hair or the shape of my eyes. Where I come from as an emerging professional is a much harder question to answer. I come from a science background, composed of small towns, gravel roads and long hours in the lab. I come from a nomadic existence with a variety of entry level jobs and professional uncertainty. I must admit that I applied to UBC’s Bachelors of Education program on a bit of a whim. I wasn’t certain if I would get in, or if I even wanted to. It was not until I received my acceptance e-mail that I was sure that teaching was at the very least a career I wanted to test out. I had some limited experience working with students, usually in an athletic or tutoring capacity, but no experience at the classroom level. I was woefully naive to the trials and tribulations that the teacher education program was about to throw my way.
